Police revealed disturbing video footage featuring a woman who set another homeless woman on fire.
The security camera footage, released on Wednesday, captures the moment a car makes a U-turn near where the 49-year-old victim was sleeping on Sacramento Street on April 26th.
The driver exits the vehicle, carrying a canister, and approaches the woman. The video shows her pouring an unknown liquid on the victim.
Out of nowhere, the woman is engulfed in flames, according to the footage. The driver then seems to be in a confrontation with someone before getting back in the car and speeding away.
The victim sustained serious burns covering about a third of her body, including her face, torso, arms, and back, and was intubated at a local hospital for over two weeks.
She was able to communicate with investigators by Tuesday and reportedly identified her attacker as 34-year-old Jacqueline Popeyeborough, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
No further victim identification has been made public.
Popeyeborough is currently being held on a $400,000 bail. The sheriff’s office mentioned that both women were familiar with each other, though they did not elaborate on what might have led to the brutal attack.
Details remain unclear about how Popeyeborough set the sleeping woman on fire.
Reportedly, Popeyeborough, who does not live on the streets, kicked the burning victim before fleeing the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.
She was already in custody at the Sacramento Police Station on unrelated robbery charges when she was identified as a suspect in the arson case.
Popeyeborough has since been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, arson causing serious bodily injury, and mayhem.
Her bail has been set at $450,000.
