Shocking video shows moment Texas cyclists hit by alleged drunken driver near major airport

A man who was reportedly drunk and driving an SUV was taken into custody after he struck two bicyclists, one of them, on a roadway near Dallas Fort Worth International Airport on Monday evening, airport police confirmed to Fox News Digital.

Just before 7 p.m., airport police received a report of a hit-and-run crash with injuries.

Police received a report that two cyclists had been hit by a car near the busy airport, with a witness capturing the horrific incident on video.

Authorities said one of the victims was bleeding from his right knee and was unable to speak, but two witnesses confirmed he remained awake until emergency responders arrived.

Video provided by a witness showed the suspect, later identified by Dallas/Fort Worth Airport Police as 31-year-old Benjamin Peter Highlander, traveling at a high rate of speed in the right lane and striking two unaware bicyclists.

The video shows the Highlander stopping briefly after the initial impact, then running over the lower body of a bicyclist and fleeing the scene in a white SUV.

Some witnesses told police they tracked Highlander to the nearest gas station, where they obtained his license plate number and demanded he return to the scene of the accident.

According to incident records, Highlander returned to the scene and ran over to the injured bicyclist, hysterically yelling “I’m sorry” while trying to speak to him.

Police said Highlander continued to apologize to the injured cyclist and when he began speaking with police, officers noticed an odor of alcohol on Highlander’s breath and his eyes were bloodshot and hollow.

When asked if he had been drinking, Highlander initially told officers he had only had one beer an hour before getting behind the wheel, but later admitted he couldn’t remember how many he had had and said it was “maybe two or three large beers.”

Officers then searched Highlander’s vehicle and found six empty beer cans in a backpack behind the passenger seat, and two empty beer cans were found in a grassy area a few feet from Highlander’s vehicle at the gas station, police said.

Police submitted all of the empty beer cans into evidence, but it is currently unclear whether two empty cans found in the grass are linked to the Highlander as the gas station was unable to provide surveillance camera footage.
