If you’ve spent any time peeking into the health-related sphere on social media, you may have come across Paul Saladino, a dually board-certified physician and advocate for an animal-based diet.
Saladino noticed a clear disregard for nutrition in addressing the skyrocketing health problems of the American public and became disillusioned with the lack of emphasis on nutrition in traditional medicine.
“I believe that ultra-processed foods are the main problem for humanity, but when I talk to myself and my colleagues who are physicians, we’re never taught about nutrition,” Saladino told Dave Rubin of The Rubin Report.
The government’s stance on the idea that ultra-processed foods might be making people sick “rang the alarm bells” for Saladino and made him think “something sinister is going on.”
One of Saladino’s main points about Americans’ ultra-processed diets is the oils that are in many of our foods, or that we use to cook otherwise healthy foods.
“Think about the oils you use to cook with,” Saladino tells Rubin, “There are many different types of cooking oils, but seed oils are probably the worst.”
These oils include corn oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil and soybean oil, “which we were told were healthy when we were kids and are still frequently touted as healthy by the American Heart Association.”
These oils are not found in nature and are themselves highly processed.
“The ones sold in the grocery store look like clear oils, but they’ve been deodorized. If they weren’t deodorized, they would smell bad. And they would smell awful. These oils are fragile and aren’t extracted from the seeds by grinding them up,” Saladino explains.
Olive oil, coconut oil, grass-fed butter, and tallow are “much better” because they’re fruit oils that aren’t made from seeds — for example, when you make olive oil, you actually press the olives to extract the oil.
“I believe the widespread use of seed oils is likely a contributing factor to the epidemic of chronic disease in the United States,” Saladino says.
The chronic disease epidemic includes not only illnesses such as cancer, but also mental health issues.
“Let’s talk a little bit about brain health, which is probably the most political topic we can talk about, because right now it seems like everyone has a theory or two about Joe Biden,” Rubin offered, adding, “It’s clear that there is an epidemic of dementia, or ultimately Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.”
“I think there’s a lot of evidence that this has to do with our lifestyle and the quality of our diet,” Saladino explains. “Neuroinflammation, or inflammation in the brain, is influenced by inflammation in the body. There’s no question about it.”
“So how does inflammation occur in the body? It starts in the gut.”
