Ohtani Considers Outfield Role for Playoffs

Shohei Ohtani has been toying with the notion of playing in the outfield this postseason.

The two-way star for the Dodgers, who hasn’t played a position since 2021, mentioned he’s willing to adapt if it benefits his team during the playoffs.

“I’ve had a lot of discussions with various people, and naturally, this topic came up,” Ohtani told Japanese reporters when queried about the possibility of suiting up in the outfield.

“As a player, I would be ready to step up wherever I’m needed,” he continued. “Whether it’s pitching or perhaps even the outfield.”

If Ohtani takes on an outfield position, he’ll still retain the ability to contribute as a designated hitter, while also helping bolster the Dodgers’ bullpen as a relief pitcher.

However, there’s a catch: if he starts as a designated hitter and later pitches, the Dodgers lose the DH option for that game.

The Dodgers are in dire need of support for their bullpen, which has been struggling recently, recording a 7.36 ERA over their last 10 games.

This season, the Dodgers’ bullpen has an overall ERA of 4.30, ranking 11th in the league.

Ohtani, who managed to pitch five no-hit innings against the Phillies, has only served as a starting pitcher this year. But discussions around shifting his role in the playoffs are gaining traction.

It’s been four years since Ohtani last played in the outfield, a role he’s filled a mere seven times in his major league career.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts gave a somewhat cautious response to the idea of Ohtani playing in the outfield. While acknowledging Ohtani’s desire to help the team win, he was not convinced that it would materialize.

“He’s a fantastic teammate,” Roberts noted. “He’s eager to contribute to our championship hopes. I appreciate his willingness, but I’m not sure it’s a viable option. He hasn’t been in the outfield all season.”
