Brooklyn Post Office Incident
A robber caused chaos at a Brooklyn post office on Monday when he brandished a firearm, but ultimately left empty-handed, as reported by authorities and various sources.
The incident took place around 1:15 PM at the USPS Midwood branch on Coney Island Avenue, near Avenue I. The suspect, who rushed into the building, was unable to steal any cash.
According to reports, the gunman demanded money from the postal worker and even directed his weapon towards the only customer present, a 37-year-old woman. Sources mentioned that she might have reacted defensively, possibly trying to subdue him.
During the harrowing experience, the woman screamed for help, as an eyewitness shared with WABC. Following this, the teller fled in panic, and the robber, seemingly frustrated, fired a shot at the door before abandoning his efforts and escaping.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, according to officers on the scene.
Investigators are looking into whether the same suspect attempted another robbery at a Payomatic store on Utica Avenue around 20 minutes later but was unsuccessful there as well. Again, no injuries occurred.
Sources noted that the suspect crashed his moped near the incident location and was subsequently taken into custody. The specific charges against him are still pending, and his identity has not been disclosed yet.
In the wake of the incident, Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Swawa criticized Mayor Eric Adams’ administration for the rise in daytime violence.
“People should feel absolutely safe at the US post office or anywhere in this city,” Swawa stated. “The current administration has set a dangerous tone by tolerating lawlessness. As mayor, I will restore and protect all New Yorkers in all my neighborhoods.”
