Shooting and Fire at Michigan Church
On Sunday morning, a tragic incident unfolded at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, resulting in at least two fatalities and eight injuries.
The chaos erupted just before 10:30 a.m. as church members were assembling for services.
According to Police Chief William Renye, the suspect has been identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford. Notably, Sanford was a graduate of a local high school and served in Iraq between 2007 and 2008.
Renye shared that Sanford allegedly crashed his vehicle into one of the church walls before stepping out and firing multiple rounds into the congregation.
Armed with an assault-style rifle, he managed to kill two individuals, with eight others suffering from gunshot wounds. Among the wounded, one person is reported to be in critical condition, whereas the remaining seven are stable.
Police were on the scene remarkably quickly, responding within a minute to the emergency call timed at 10:25 a.m. Renye stated they engaged in a shootout with the suspect and neutralized him by 10:33 a.m. in the church’s parking area.
During the attack, it’s believed that the gunman intentionally ignited a fire within the church, creating significant smoke that spread across the area. Investigators are currently working to ascertain the exact timeline and origin of the fire.
Evidence technicians have been dispatched to examine the church, as there are concerns that additional victims may still be trapped.
FBI agents, responding to the situation, have arrived to assist local law enforcement. Meanwhile, there is a notable police presence at the suspect’s residence, including a bomb squad, as the motive behind this shocking attack remains unclear.
In response to the shooting, former President Donald Trump issued a statement, expressing his condolences and highlighting the involvement of the FBI in the investigation alongside local officials. He described the incident as a “horrendous shooting” and noted, “this appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States.” He urged the public to pray for the victims and emphasized the need to address the country’s escalating violence.
This unsettling event brings to light ongoing concerns surrounding safety and violence in places of worship.
