Shooting at Brown University Claims Two Lives

Over the weekend, a tragic shooting occurred at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, resulting in the deaths of two students.

The victims were identified as Ella Cook and Muhammad Aziz Umurzokov. They were shot on Saturday night when a masked gunman entered their classroom and opened fire. In addition to the fatalities, about nine others sustained injuries, with one individual in critical condition, according to reports.

Authorities apprehended a suspect, but later released the individual. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha noted there was “no basis” to consider the person as a suspect of interest.

Brown University reassured the community that there is no immediate threat and that law enforcement continues to investigate.

Ella Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore from Alabama, was one of the students who lost her life. The Cathedral Church of Advent in Birmingham, Alabama, paid tribute to her during Sunday services, which were streamed live. The pastor, Craig Smalley, described Cook as “an incredibly down-to-earth, loyal, bright light” who uplifted those around her at Brown.

Cook was set to begin her studies at Brown University in 2024 and was reportedly the vice president of the College Republicans.

Similarly, the American Association of Uzbekistan expressed its condolences for Umurzokov the following day. They described him as a person of keen intellect and a kind heart, respected for his humility and generosity. The tribute emphasized the lost potential in his short life and the void it left in the lives of those who knew him.

Umurzokov’s roommate, freshman Kimari Manz, recalled how he immediately reached out when assigned as a roommate. Manz described him as always being there for others, showing that he truly resonated with the community.

After a lengthy lockdown of 13 hours, Brown University reopened with limited operations on Sunday. The university announced that all remaining fall 2025 classes, exams, and projects have been canceled. Students can either accept their current grades, request an incomplete, or submit their work by January 7, 2026.
