Shooting at Des Moines, Iowa post office injures 3; suspect taken into custody

Three people were injured in a shooting Thursday at a U.S. Postal Service facility in Des Moines, Iowa, and a suspect is in custody, police said.

The shooting was reported at the post office at 1165 Second Ave. Several agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, responded.

Des Moines police said they began receiving calls from inside the building at about 9:10 a.m. Reports indicated someone was shooting on the second floor. Officers arrived within three minutes, Sgt. Paul Parizek said.

Three victims were taken to a hospital. Police initially believed their injuries were not life-threatening, though their condition was not immediately confirmed.

Parizek said officers were able to stop the attack before more people were hurt. The building was secure, he added.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said the state was monitoring the situation and expressed support for those affected. Rep. Zach Nunn also said he was following developments and thanked the officers and first responders at the scene.

The motive for the shooting was not immediately known. Authorities asked the public to stay away from the area while the investigation continued.
