Israeli Embassy Staff Killed in D.C. Shooting
The tragic shooting of two staff members from the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., underscores the view that political violence represents what some describe as the “eighth front” in Israel’s ongoing conflicts.
“This act is motivated by a political agenda aimed at eliminating the Israeli state,” said Yechiel Leiter, responding to reporters after the attack. The embassy staff were leaving an event hosted by the American Jewish Commission when the incident occurred, resulting in the deaths of Jaron Lisinski and Sarah Milgrim.
Authorities have reported that 31-year-old Elias Rodriguez, a left-wing activist, shouted “free, free Palestine” immediately after the attack on the couple, who were reportedly about to get engaged.
According to Leiter, Israel is already engaged in seven distinct battles, with this assault representing an additional struggle. He described it as part of a larger effort to demonize and diminish the legitimacy of the Israeli state.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasized the need for Israel to “protect itself” from what he refers to as “enemies of civilization” across various fronts, including fighting Hamas in Gaza and contending with Hezbollah in Lebanon, among other conflicts.
Netanyahu stated, “When Israel stands against these Iran-backed militant forces, it is crucial for civil societies worldwide to stand with Israel.” He pointed out the need to support Israel in this broader conflict.
The ambassador expressed a shared commitment between the United States and Israel to combat rising anti-Israel and anti-Zionist sentiments. He labeled Hamas a “death cult,” claiming that their intent is to wage war on behalf of Iran.
In a reflection on the shooting, Leiter connected Rodriguez’s chant to broader anti-Israel rhetoric prominent in academic settings during previous protests. He reiterated the importance of recognizing the underlying motivations behind such violence.
Lastly, he paid tribute to the victims, remembering Lisinski and Milgrim as a vibrant and beloved couple. He described Lisinski as someone who brought joy to those around him and Milgrim as a bright presence, highlighting their connection and the loss felt by their community.
