Mass Shooting at Block Party in South Georgia
A shooting during a neighborhood block party in South Georgia resulted in two fatalities and many injuries early Sunday morning, as reported by officials.
Over 1,000 people were present when more than 50 shots rang out from at least two locations about a block apart in Vienna, according to Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy.
Deputies were patrolling the area when the gunfire erupted around 1:25 a.m. on Pine Street. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) noted that the sheriff’s office had called for their support.
Sadly, two individuals died on the spot from gunshot wounds, while 35 others were injured. Most of the injured had gunshot wounds, although some were hit by vehicles or sustained other injuries as the crowd fled the scene. Those injured were taken to hospitals for medical care.
Peavy reported chaotic scenes, with people “going every direction,” and more gunfire occurred even as officers were present about a block away.
He expressed the uncertainty of the situation, stating, “We don’t know if it’s coming at us or someone else. You just have to keep doing what you’re doing and hope you don’t get hit by gunfire.”
The GBI indicated that the ages of the injured range from 14 to 51, with their conditions varying from stable to critical.
The deceased have been identified as 21-year-old Jaquevion Jackson from Cordele and 23-year-old Macaleb Jackson from Hawkinsville. This tragic event coincided with the homecoming weekend for Dooly County High School.
Dooly County School System Superintendent Sherrod Willaford clarified that the shooting was not associated with any school-sponsored activities but acknowledged its potential impact on the community.
Schools plan to reopen on Monday, although additional safety measures will be in place. Vienna’s Mayor Eddie Daniels mentioned that no permit was issued for the block party, and he couldn’t confirm if it was connected to homecoming festivities.
At this time, authorities have not apprehended any suspects, nor have they determined a motive or how many shooters were involved.
Peavy urged anyone involved to come forward, stating, “Please turn yourself in, because we’re doing everything we can to find out who you are.”
The investigation is ongoing. Vienna, located approximately 130 miles south of Atlanta, is not too far from Macon, where a separate incident last week wounded 12 teenagers at a birthday party in a city park.
