Officer Killed in Shooting Near CDC in Atlanta

Local authorities reported on Friday that the shooting which claimed the life of a police officer may have targeted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta.

During a press conference, officials noted, “You can tell that multiple rounds have been fired. While we can’t definitively say it was aimed at the CDC, it’s now a possibility that we can’t dismiss.”

The incident took place on Friday afternoon near the CDC campus and Emory University, resulting in the death of one DeKalb County police officer, while another officer was injured and transported to a hospital.

Four bullet holes were discovered on the walls of the CDC campus, officials stated.

Premier Greg Padric of the DeKalb County Police Department expressed, “We are seeking community prayers for his family, friends, and the entire DeKalb County Police Department. This is a noble profession that we all share.” He referred to the deceased officer as a devoted father and a dedicated officer.

Later on, the DeKalb County Police identified the fallen officer as David Rose, commending his commitment to protecting the community.

CDC Director Susan Monares praised the quick response from law enforcement. “We are heartbroken by the events at our campus today as investigations continue,” she said. “Courageous local officers acted quickly, resulting in one injury after gunfire was directed at several buildings on the campus.”

The shooter was found dead at the scene, having suffered a bullet wound. It remains unclear if he inflicted the wound on himself or if it was caused by police return fire. Paul Brown, an FBI special agent, reported that the shooter was a white male.

However, CNN indicated that law enforcement believes the shooter may have been suffering from mental health issues, specifically harboring grievances about the Covid-19 vaccine.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens addressed CDC employees during a press briefing, saying, “We understand it’s been a tough year for those at the CDC. Your work matters, and today has been difficult.” He reassured the audience of the city’s support, stating, “We’re here for you and committed to addressing this situation.”
