West Virginia National Guard Members Shot Near White House

On Wednesday afternoon, lawmakers from both parties expressed their condolences after two National Guard members from West Virginia were shot near the White House.

The news prompted immediate reactions from West Virginia’s congressional delegation. President Trump labeled the suspected gunman as an “animal,” vowing that he would be held accountable for his actions.

In response to the developing situation, President Trump shared a message on his Truth Social platform: “The animal that shot and killed the two National Guardsmen was seriously injured and is currently hospitalized. He will pay a very high price either way. God bless our great National Guard and all of our military and law enforcement,” he added.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey expressed deep sorrow, stating he and his wife were “devastated” upon hearing the news. FBI Director Kash Patel later clarified that the two National Guard members are actually in critical condition, correcting the earlier reports of their deaths.

Both of West Virginia’s Republican senators offered their thoughts and prayers, while Democrats from the state also sent messages of support.

Mike Pushkin, chairman of the West Virginia Democratic Party, expressed his condolences: “Our hearts are heavy for the two National Guard members shot tonight in Washington, D.C. This tragic act of violence should never occur in our country. It’s a bipartisan tragedy, and we honor the service of these soldiers.”

Beyond West Virginia, national Democratic leaders like Chuck Schumer and Gavin Newsom denounced the violence, stressing that regardless of motive, such actions cannot be tolerated.

California Governor Newsom condemned the shooting, stating, “The National Guard shooting in Washington, D.C., is horrific and unacceptable. We have zero tolerance for violence against those who serve our communities and country.” He expressed his thoughts for the service members and their families.

Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll provided details on the incident, describing the gunman as having ambushed the two National Guard members. Other nearby Guardsmen intervened, leading to the suspect’s arrest after sustaining injuries.

As the investigation continues, information about the shooter remains scarce and their identity has not yet been revealed.
