Gunfight Outside Israeli Consulate in Istanbul
A shooting incident occurred in front of the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. This confrontation resulted in one attacker dead, two others injured, and two police officers sustaining minor injuries.
According to the interior minister, the armed assailants have links to a group that “exploited religion.” He further elaborated that those involved had arrived in Istanbul from Izmit and were associated with organizations that misuse religious sentiments. Notably, one of the attackers, who were brothers, had a history of drug use.
US Ambassador to Turkey expressed strong condemnation of the attack, stating it represents a broader threat to international order. He commended Turkish authorities for their prompt response to the situation, stating, “The attack on the diplomatic mission is an attack on the principles that unite nations.”
In response to the gunfire, police evacuated a nearby security checkpoint at the consulate. Reports indicate the gunfire, which lasted for about ten minutes, led to chaos in the vicinity, with employees from a nearby bank witnessing the events unfold.
Video footage captured the assailant, who was dressed in dark clothing and armed with automatic weapons, moving through the area while firing shots. The aftermath saw bodies lying on nearby streets and areas, an overwhelming and shocking scene.
As the governor of Istanbul noted, two police officers were slightly injured during the incident. This is particularly significant as the consulate has not hosted any Israeli diplomats for over two years due to tensions following the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that no staff were present at the consulate when the shooting happened.
Circling the larger context, tensions between Turkey and Israel have escalated significantly since November 2023, when Turkey withdrew its ambassador following critiques of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. The shooting occurred close to a major highway, close to a building housing the consulate, raising security concerns further.
Since the outbreak of pro-Palestinian protests, Israeli diplomats had left Turkey over safety fears, prompting a substantial police presence near the consulate that remains to this day.
