Shooting suspect leads cops on wild high-speed chase then survives suicide attempt

A deranged gunman led officers on a wild chase on a California highway before attempting to kill himself with his own gun, police said.

The frenzy began around 11 a.m. Friday on Interstate 101 in Windsor and ended with the suspect critically injured on Interstate 80 near Fairfield, about 40 miles southwest of Sacramento. WKGO TV reported.

Police said the unidentified man fired shots at another car, shattering the rear window and narrowly missing a woman inside, before driving off in a silver Toyota sedan.

A California Highway Patrol officer later spotted the car at a local shopping center, starting a high-speed chase that spanned four California counties and ended on a freeway near Fairfield, about 40 miles southwest of Sacramento. It stopped. The outlet reported.

Officers deployed spike strips to stop the car, but the incident was not over.

Police closed the interstate in both directions for several hours as the gunman thwarted officers.

The confrontation ended with the gunman attempting suicide and shooting himself with his own weapon.

However, WKGO announced that he survived and is in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
