Providence police recently released body camera footage from their response to the December 13 shooting at Brown University, along with audio from emergency calls and radio communications. Some content was redacted to maintain the privacy of victims and witnesses.
According to a new police report, when detectives presented a photo of the suspect, Claudio Neves Valente, one victim had a strong physical reaction, freezing up, shaking, and crying upon seeing the image. The report notes that she confirmed the photo depicted the gunman.
Other victims were shown the same images separately and identified Neves Valente as the assailant.
Interestingly, the authorities managed to narrow down their suspect after meticulously reviewing surveillance footage around the campus and surrounding neighborhood. Neves Valente was described as a burly man clad in a face mask, a dark jacket, black pants, and sneakers, with a black bag slung over his body that was captured on camera at various times.
Detectives observed a distinctive walking pattern across multiple video clips taken before and after the incident, indicating the suspect’s movements in the area for several hours leading up to when he left the Barth & Hawley building shortly after the shooting.
