Weekend shootings near college communities leave one dead and at least 21 injured

Gunfire at crowded gatherings in Indiana, Delaware and Alabama over the weekend left one person dead and at least 21 others injured, authorities and university officials said.

Seven people were hospitalized after a shooting near Indiana University in Bloomington. In Newark, Delaware, at least six people were reportedly hospitalized after gunfire on Main Street. And near Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, one person was killed and eight were wounded after the Magic City Classic football game.

Bloomington shooting

Police officers monitoring a large crowd near Kirkwood Avenue and Dunn Street heard gunshots at about 1:30 a.m. ET Sunday, Bloomington police said. Officers then saw a man carrying a firearm run from the area.

The man was taken into custody near Dunn Meadow. Officers recovered a gun and shell casings, but investigators have not determined whether the detained man fired any shots. No deaths were reported, and police said they did not know whether there were other victims.

Police said a disturbance in the crowd may have happened before the shooting. Indiana University police and Indiana State Police assisted with the response.

Shooting in Newark, Delaware

A shooting on Main Street in Newark on Saturday night affected the University of Delaware community. The university said it was concerned about the incident and thanked Newark police, who are leading the investigation.

University President Laura Carlson said those injured were receiving care. She also thanked campus police and other first responders, and urged the community to keep victims in mind as well as students and others who witnessed the violence.

The university has not confirmed how many people were shot or whether anyone died. At least six people were reportedly hospitalized. The school asked students and staff to check its alerts page for verified updates.

One killed near Magic City Classic

In Birmingham, officers found nine people with gunshot wounds in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West shortly after 7:50 p.m. ET Saturday, police said. One person died. One of the wounded was in critical condition, while seven others were reported stable.

Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said most fans and families had left the stadium area, but the shooting happened nearby, where vendors had set up along Graymont Avenue. He said he was grateful that more people were not hurt.

Police spokesperson De’Rell Freeman said one person was detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning. Officers also recovered and secured multiple weapons.

The Magic City Classic is the annual matchup between Alabama State and Alabama A&M, historically Black universities and longtime rivals. Nearly 70,000 people attended Saturday’s game, which Alabama A&M won 31-28. The event has been played for more than a century and draws one of the largest crowds among games in its college football division.

Alabama State coach Eddie Robinson Jr., a former NFL linebacker and an alumnus of the school, has proposed establishing a Hall of Fame for the game.

Other shootings

In Dallas, four people were killed and 15 injured in three separate shootings in one neighborhood, police said. Authorities are still investigating whether the incidents were connected and what led to them. Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said some arrests had been made, but did not provide a number or details about possible charges. Investigators were questioning people in custody as they worked to establish how the shootings may be related.

In Fayetteville, Arkansas, six people were taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds after a shooting early Sunday. Police said no arrests had been made. A preliminary investigation suggests an altercation took place before the gunfire.
