Three police officers were injured and a gunman was killed in a gunfight in Jordan early Sunday near the Israeli embassy, authorities said.
Jordan's Public Security Authority said the gunman opened fire in the Rabia neighborhood of the capital Amman. Police chased the perpetrator and shot him dead.
“As he was chased and surrounded, he began firing at the security forces. As a result, the rules of engagement were applied, resulting in the perpetrator being killed,” the statement said.
Jordan's Communications Minister Mohamed told Reuters the shooting was a terrorist attack targeting the country's security forces.

“Any violation of national security and attack on security personnel will be met with a firm response,” Momani told the newspaper.

Authorities did not immediately identify the shooter or a motive, but Momani said the gunman had a criminal history of drug trafficking.

Jordan is a close ally of the West, having made peace with Israel in 1994, but relations have been strained during Israel's war in Gaza, sparked by the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023.

Jordan has a large Palestinian population, and there have been repeated protests in front of the Israeli embassy, with demonstrators sometimes clashing with police.
