Indie Wrestling Scene Sees New Developments
The title of “Indie God” in the wrestling world, especially in non-major circuits, really gained traction back when Matt Cardona was racking up victories in smaller promotions.
After being released from WWE in 2020, Cardona embraced this title fully. He made a strong impression on the indie scene, winning several championships with organizations like Game Changer Wrestling, House of Glory, and more. Yet, as he prepares to return to WWE in 2025, it seems that perhaps the title of “Indy God” should now belong to someone else.
Cardona has previously mentioned to others that he doubts anyone can achieve the “Indy God” status anymore. However, he did highlight wrestlers like Shotzi Blackheart, Richard Holiday, and Ben Bishop as noteworthy talents really making their mark. When Shotzi was asked about these comments, she suggested that Cardona now realizes he’s not the only one in that conversation.
“I think he knows that I am, well, come on,” she remarked. “For example, I know he was signed by the time the PWI Independent Wrestler of the Year poll came out. But I beat him by a wide margin. So, yeah, I think the fans know that. I beat him in the ring, I beat him in the magazine.”
She then asserted that Cardona needs to publicly acknowledge her achievements. “He keeps saying, ‘Well, I mean, probably Ben Bishop and Richard (Holliday) as well.’ No, shut up! This is Shotzi Blackheart. We created something really special in the indies, not everyone can write stories that resonate like ours, so he needs to admit I’ve earned the title of ‘Indie God’.”
Indeed, Shotzi is making waves.
Recently, she’s been traveling worldwide, competing in numerous matches, and has made a significant impact in Major League Wrestling by capturing the MLW Women’s World Championship.
Looking ahead, she plans to dive back into the indie circuit, participating in a 10-woman battle royal next week aimed at determining the No. 1 contender for Awesome Championship Wrestling’s women’s title, taking place in Poughkeepsie, New York.
Additionally, Shotzi holds titles from both the House of Glory and Atomic Legacy Wrestling, showcasing her range and determination within the wrestling scene.
