Should Taylor Lorenz and BLM leader be silenced for celebrating violence?

It is easy to stand up for the First Amendment if you agree with the speech that is being threatened. But what really matters is standing up for free speech when you don't like the words being spoken.

it's a difficult position glenn beck He takes on board the vile comments made by former Washington Post reporter Taylor Lorenz and BLM co-founder Hawk Newsom. Although he detests the violence both countries are celebrating in the wake of recent events, he still supports First Amendment rights.

Taylor Lorenz has come under fire for her comments following the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

In a conversation with Piers Morgan, Lorenz said she felt “joyful” when she heard the news of Thompson's death.

When Piers confronted her about this heinous emotion, she backtracked somewhat, replacing the word “joy” with the word “celebration.” As if it were better. And she said, “Greedy health insurance executives… [Thompson] His death should be seen as “justice in the system” because he “promoted policies that denied care to the most vulnerable.”

Angered by Daniel Penny's acquittal, Newsom told the crowd: “We need black vigilantes. Do people want to jump up at the top of their lungs and strangle us and kill us? When they try to oppress us, what if we do the same? What do you think?”

Glenn objects to these two statements, which condone violence, but knows that they constitute constitutionally protected speech.

He pointed to a 1969 case law in which it was decided that speech must be evaluated according to a “dual-pronged” test, in which “speech is directed toward inciting or causing an imminently unlawful act.” If there is, it may be prohibited.” and It must be “likely to provoke or cause such behavior”.

“There are two criteria, both of which must be met,” Glenn says.

Neither statement meets both of these criteria. That is, although they should be condemned, they are not strictly illegal and should be protected.

“I hate what these people are saying,” Glenn admitted, calling Lorenz and Newsom's comments “evil,” but added, “I'm an American constitutional scholar, so I defend their right to speak.” said.
