Shutdown battle escalates as Thune cautions that Democrats seek political drama

Senate Majority Leader Critiques Democrats on Government Funding

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) expressed his concerns that Senate Democrats might be leading the charge towards a government shutdown for political gain. In a conversation with Fox News Digital, he suggested that the Democrats, under the leadership of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), appear to be prioritizing their base’s demands over practical solutions.

Thune reflected on a previous instance in March where Democrats partnered with Republicans to keep the government running, noting that their approach to managing shutdown risks has since changed significantly, becoming less favorable to more traditional political negotiations.

He described the current climate within the Democratic Party as one where, perhaps, the influence of their base is so strong that it creates a “borderline pathology.” Thune stated, “It’s as if they can’t grasp the reality of the situation and are steering the party towards avoiding necessary government funding.”

This week, House Republicans introduced a Continuing Resolution (CR) designed to fund the government without any contentious riders attached. The proposed legislation aims to secure the budget for Washington, D.C., while also allocating funds for enhancing security for lawmakers and various administrative functions.

Although the House is on track to pass the bill on Friday, Thune highlighted that getting Senate Democrats on board is another challenge. So far, they seem reluctant to support it.

Thune asserted that the proposal aligns closely with what Democrats sought during Biden’s administration. Yet, he pointed out that a lack of effective communication has hampered progress. Schumer accused Thune of failing to engage in broader discussions about the bill, claiming the GOP isn’t doing enough to prevent a potential government shutdown.

In response, Thune mentioned efforts to initiate dialogue with Schumer, indicating that their attempts were dismissed. “He was almost rushing away from the conversation,” Thune recalled. He seems to believe that a more open approach could facilitate a collaborative solution regarding government funding.

On the other side, Senate Democrats unveiled their counterproposal late Wednesday. This bill includes various priorities that were not part of the CR, such as extending benefits related to Obamacare and restoring funds cut from Public Broadcasting Services.

Thune acknowledged that there could be points of discussion regarding short-term extensions, but he stressed that the steadfast opposition from Democrats poses a significant challenge. Resolving this involves passing numerous spending bills, a process Congress has struggled with for decades.

Further complicating matters, both chambers of Congress are currently working to advance three spending bills they’ve already passed. Thune hopes that avoiding a government shutdown would allow them to push forward with the remaining budget items.

“This will be a test of their commitment to a genuine spending process and whether they are willing to work together,” he noted. Thune remains hopeful that with a collaborative effort, they can reach a bipartisan agreement on funding the government effectively.

As urgency builds ahead of the September 30 deadline, Thune has hinted at the possibility of weekend sessions in the Senate. With Congress also scheduled to observe the Jewish New Year, the pressure is mounting, and these discussions will be critical in the coming days.

Thune expressed clarity on the challenges that lie ahead, indicating that the process will be tough but essential to moving forward. The stakes are high, and how Democrats respond may very well shape the funding landscape for the foreseeable future.
