Sidney Crosby's situation for the remainder of the Olympics is uncertain amid Canada's struggles

MILAN — Sidney Crosby couldn’t hit the ice for the final period of Canada’s quarterfinal matchup against the Czech Republic on Wednesday. Still, the team captain took a moment to inspire his teammates before joining a 2-on-2 game, knowing that a chance at the Olympic semifinals was at stake.

Despite whatever emotional appeal he made after suffering a lower-body injury, Team Canada rallied, clinching a 4-3 overtime win over the Czech Republic.

“I think that was significant,” Canadian head coach John Cooper remarked. “We lost this game, and we definitely didn’t want it to be Sid’s last game at these Olympics.” It really served as motivation moving forward for everyone.

According to ESPN, there hasn’t been an update yet on Crosby’s condition, as he is slated for imaging tests to assess the severity of his injury.

Crosby, now 38, took a heavy hit from Radko Gudas, which led to his right leg being awkwardly positioned. Not long after, Gudas, along with Martin Necas, sent Crosby crashing into the boards.

Visibly shaken, Crosby took his time getting to the bench and seemed to be in considerable pain. After a discussion with his trainer, he exited to the locker room for the rest of the game.

When Gudas was asked about the incident, he admitted he hadn’t seen the replay and expressed hope that Crosby would be okay.

Mitch Marner, who netted the game-winning goal, noted, “Losing Crosby obviously sucks. I really hope he’s alright. It’s tough; he’s a crucial part of this team, both on and off the ice.”

Even down a goal at the 12:18 mark in the third period, the Canadians found their footing after Crosby’s pep talk. Nick Suzuki eventually tied it up, and Marner secured the lead in overtime.

This marks Crosby’s fourth consecutive time leading Team Canada as captain in this elite tournament.

Throughout three games, Crosby notched two goals and four assists.

“We really rally around him,” Drew Doughty shared. “I hope he’ll be good to go for the next game. But if not, everyone has to step up. It’s disappointing to see a player with his stature go down. But, well, what can we do?”
