Progress on Ukraine-Russia Peace Deal
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted significant advancements in negotiations for a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, stating that only a few “delicate, but not insurmountable” issues remain to be addressed.
“In the last week, we’ve made tremendous strides toward a peace deal by engaging both parties,” Leavitt expressed on X on Tuesday. “While a few delicate details still need resolution, I believe further discussions among Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. will be necessary.”
This announcement came shortly after Rustem Umerov, the Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, revealed that key terms for a potential agreement to conclude the months-long conflict have been reached.
Ukraine faces a deadline of Thursday, coinciding with Thanksgiving, to consent to a 28-point peace plan put forth by the Trump administration, though there are concerns that the plan may be biased toward Russian interests.
As per the proposed framework, Ukraine would need to enshrine in its constitution the commitment to avoid NATO membership, remain a non-nuclear state, and cede certain territories to Russia. However, the deal also includes security assurances and rebuilding aid for Ukraine from various nations, including the United States. This assistance would cover infrastructure repair and help reconnect families affected by the war.
Furthermore, the agreement would prevent Russia from engaging in aggressive actions against Ukraine or its neighbors.
President Trump has reiterated that discussions on the Ukraine-Russia peace deal are ongoing and subject to change, despite the recent positive developments. U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll recently met with Russian officials in Abu Dhabi, according to reports.
Leavitt also mentioned that there are currently no plans for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to visit the White House as Trump prepares to spend Thanksgiving in Florida.
