Significant lead by Dolphins erased due to debated penalty

Controversial Penalty Affects Dolphins in Ravens Game

In a surprising turn of events during Thursday’s game between the Dolphins and Ravens, officials overturned a significant play for Miami, citing a tripping penalty against running back Ollie Gordon III.

Gordon was engaged in blocking when he fell backward, seemingly by accident, which led to him tripping Baltimore linebacker Mike Green.

This decision resulted in a costly 15-yard penalty against the Dolphins, negating what would have been a big catch for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, and hindering Miami’s momentum as they approached the red zone.

Post-call, Gordon’s frustration was palpable; he was seen yelling at the referee on the sidelines, with coaches attempting to diffuse the situation.

Commentator Kirk Herbstreit questioned the call, expressing, “Terry, can I jump in here? I didn’t see any of his foot whipping or tripping.” Terry Macaulay, a rules analyst and former NFL official, concurred, stating, “Kirk, that’s not a foul. He catches his opponent with his lower body but doesn’t interfere with his foot. That’s a false call.”

To make matters worse, shortly after the penalty, Gordon injured his ankle during a play, raising concerns about his return.

The 21-year-old running back was listed as questionable to continue. Miami was in a favorable position, leading Baltimore 14-6 at halftime despite the officiating blunder.

At the break, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had amassed 152 passing yards, completing 15 of 22 attempts.

Meanwhile, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson threw two touchdown passes to tight end Mark Andrews, who is the subject of trade speculation as the deadline nears. Baltimore’s 2-5 record adds pressure to evaluate their roster, particularly with Andrews in the final year of a lucrative contract.
