Simon Cowell Discusses His Unique Health Routine
Simon Cowell recently shared some insights into his unusual health practices. The 66-year-old music producer revealed that he undergoes a process of ‘flushing’ and ‘filtering’ his blood, claiming it helps him age better—though he didn’t go into specifics about the procedure. It closely resembles apheresis, a medical technique where blood is withdrawn, processed to separate its components, and then reintroduced into the body, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
“I go to this health clinic where they draw blood, rinse it, filter it, and then put it back in,” Cowell explained during an interview. He further mentioned, “All these tests indicate your age. By focusing on better nutrition, exercising, managing stress, and taking certain supplements, I feel like I’m aging in the opposite direction. My brain is sharp, and I still have energy.”
Previously, the X Factor judge has discussed other cosmetic procedures he’s tried, like Botox and fillers. In 2022, however, he admitted to possibly having “gone a little too far” and has since cut back on fillers. “For me, it now comes down to eating well and drinking plenty of water,” he noted.
Understanding Blood Treatments
The clinic where Cowell receives treatment offers EBOO, or extracorporeal blood oxygenation and ozonation. This alternative therapy circulates blood outside the body, exposing it to medical-grade ozone and oxygen before filtering it and returning it to the bloodstream. Experts, however, caution that evidence supporting its effectiveness is limited.
Ralph Montagu, a longevity specialist at a London clinic, noted that treatments like EBOO are capturing the interest of celebrities due to their advanced blood filtering technology intended to promote longevity. Montagu mentioned, “For many, it’s not just about extending life but improving its quality.”
He also highlighted potential benefits such as increased energy, enhanced immune function, and improved mood and sleep. “Many clients report better mental clarity and emotional stability,” he added.
Risk and Considerations
Though EBOO might seem beneficial, Montague warned that it’s not suitable for everyone. Those with bleeding disorders should avoid it, as the procedure may elevate the risk of clots. Furthermore, he noted that ozone therapy could induce oxidative stress, ultimately damaging red blood cells, particularly in individuals with G6PD deficiency, a hereditary condition making red blood cells more fragile.
“Individuals with heart issues, especially those who have recently suffered a heart attack or have severe heart failure, should consult a physician before considering this treatment,” he cautioned. “It’s also unclear if it’s safe for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals.”
According to Montague, while these therapies offer intriguing possibilities, they are not thoroughly regulated or proven and could be dangerous. Dr. Mark Siegel, a senior medical analyst, echoed these concerns, stating that such procedures can cause serious issues, including organ damage and blood clots.
Some medical experts are proponents of the procedure, like Dr. Brett Osborne, who runs a longevity clinic. He emphasizes that apheresis—though effective for specific medical conditions—should be strictly managed and supervised in a medical setting to ensure safety.
Osborne clarified that while the therapy helps alleviate some factors contributing to aging and chronic illness, it shouldn’t replace essential health practices like proper nutrition, exercise, and stress management.
