Simone Biles Critiques Riley Gaines Over Trans Athlete Activism
Olympic champion Simone Biles has labeled fellow athlete Riley Gaines as “sick” due to Gaines’ stance against transgender athletes participating in women’s sports. This comment comes amid recent discussions surrounding the qualifications and impacts of trans athletes in competitive sports.
According to reports, a transgender athlete recently contributed to the Minnesota high school softball team’s remarkable success by performing exceptionally well during the season. Marissa Rothenberger’s performances, including multiple hits and a flawless pitching game, have sparked significant attention, especially with the Champlin Park girls’ team heading to the state championship.
On Friday, swimmer Riley Gaines responded to a social media post from the Minnesota State High School League that celebrated the Champlin Park girls’ team. Gaines criticized the post, implying the team’s success was not merit-based due to the inclusion of a male player.
In backlash, Biles labeled Gaines as a “bully” and accused her of being a “hard loser,” emphasizing the need for inclusiveness in sports.
“You’re really sick for this campaign,” Biles stated in her response. “It seems like you’re just upset about losing.” She advocated for finding ways to support the trans community in sports and pushed for the creation of inclusive avenues.
Gaines pushed back, expressing disappointment in Biles’ comments. She argued that it’s not women’s responsibility to accommodate men in their competitive spaces, suggesting that men shouldn’t compete in women’s sports.
Biles went further to critique Gaines’ appearance, adding a personal touch to her retort. “Ironically, bully your own size that will become a man,” she stated, which did not sit well with many onlookers.
Reactions to Biles’ comments were largely negative, with critics arguing that she was dismissing the concerns surrounding women’s sports by seemingly supporting male participation. This disapproval came from a wide array of political views, with only a few supporters expressing agreement with Biles. Activist Sall Grover noted that an attempt to create a category for trans athletes in the Swimming World Cup failed when there were no entries.
Biles’ defenses were seen by many as insufficient and raised questions about her stance on the presence of men in women’s competitive sports. When a commenter pointed out anatomical differences in gymnastics categories, Biles challenged them, implying they lacked comprehension.
Public opinion appears to be shifting. Recent polling indicates a growing majority of Americans supporting restrictions on trans participation in women’s sports. A recent survey highlighted that a significant portion of the population believes trans athletes should not compete in women’s categories, signaling a noteworthy trend in public sentiment.
