Simone Biles Engages in Controversy Over Trans Athletes
Simone Biles, a prominent figure in U.S. gymnastics, has recently entered a contentious dialogue. This interaction involves women’s sports advocate and former NCAA swimmer, Riley Gaines, centering on the topic of trans athletes.
Biles experienced significant backlash following her comments regarding Pro Trunks, which seemingly led her to delete her X account.
Gaines noted Biles’ decision to withdraw from X, expressing disappointment over the situation, saying, “Such a genius falling like this” was disheartening.
In her response, Gaines remarked, “An incredibly unpopular, morally unprotected take, legitimately ridiculed; after facing intense backlash, we delete our account and act as if it never occurred.”
Biles’ controversy sparked earlier this month after she inexplicably criticized Gaines’ post concerning a trans athlete from Minnesota. Marissa Rothenberger, who identifies as a woman, competed against other women and won the state championship at Shamplin Park High School.
A photo of the victorious team was shared on social media, although the school anticipated controversy and disabled comments on the post, stating, “We expect what you’ll expect when your star player is a boy.”
Biles then stepped into the fray, publicly denouncing Gaines.
“This campaign arises because you lost the race. It intensifies the pain of those who didn’t win,” Biles commented. “We should uplift the trans community, perhaps find ways to make sports inclusive, creating new pathways where trans individuals feel safe in sports.”
Following Gaines’ challenge to Biles about the inherent advantages men possess in sports, many users on X criticized Biles for her comments.
In light of the pushback, Biles later issued an apology to Gaines, saying, “I wanted to follow up from my last tweet. I’ve always believed in the importance of competitive fairness and inclusion in sports. The current system often fails to balance these principles, resulting in frustration.”
Biles concluded, “We all desire a future of sports that is fair, inclusive, and respectful.”
Despite her recent withdrawal from X, Biles continues to maintain her presence on other social media platforms.
