Simone Biles stirred up some discussions at the ESPY Awards recently.
Just weeks after a noteworthy clash with Riley Gaines over gender issues in sports, Biles took home the award for Best Championship Performance during the 2024 Olympics, where she won gold in the all-around. Her acceptance speech certainly caught attention.
“It was quite unexpected, especially competing against all guys. So, thank you!” she remarked with a chuckle.
The audience at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles responded with laughter.
This moment followed her recent back-and-forth with former collegiate swimmer Gaines during a heated debate about transgender athletes.
Biles triumphed over notable contenders like Dodgers pitcher Freddie Freeman, golfer Rory McIlroy, and NBA star Stephen Curry.
“I’m grateful to receive this award,” Biles shared. “This recognition means a lot more than you might think. I want to express my thanks to everyone who has supported me on this journey—my teammates, competitors, coaches, family, and fans have all been there for me every step of the way.”
She added, “I’m excited to share this award with my team of supporters.”
“Having a solid support system is crucial—not just during the wins, but also during the tough times,” Biles reflected. “I truly appreciate all of you who have been with me throughout this incredible journey, through all the ups and downs.”
Biles, who wore a custom Athleta dress and was affectionate with her husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens, also took a moment to recognize the victims of the recent Texas flood.
“Before I dive deeper into my speech, I want to share my heartfelt sadness for everyone affected by the devastating flash flood in central Texas on July 4th,” she said. “Words can’t ease your pain, but please know that our hearts are with you during these challenging times.”
