Backlash Against Rosie O’Donnell’s Economic Boycott Call

Comedian Rosie O’Donnell stirred a significant reaction on Instagram after advocating for a boycott of the U.S. economy. Many users criticized her as being disconnected from the reality of working Americans, and the response was stronger than she might have anticipated.

In her post, O’Donnell urged people to skip work, stay home, and avoid restaurants. Accompanying her message was a meme that proclaimed, “We’re not asking for it. We’re shutting it down,” and she claimed it would be “the largest economic blackout protest in U.S. history.”

While it’s clear this call for an economic shutdown isn’t likely to have a serious impact on the economy, the backlash was fierce. Many commenters ridiculed O’Donnell, referring to her post as silly and impractical.

One user sarcastically pointed out, “Thanks for covering my rent and transportation,” reflecting the struggles many face. Another added, “What have restaurants done to deserve this? Many family-owned businesses will suffer. Service staff rely on tips, and a lot of those workers live paycheck to paycheck.”

Another commenter emphasized the privilege required to even consider such a protest, declaring, “It’s easy for some people to sit back and advocate for these things without thinking of the consequences for small businesses. We won’t even be able to cover rent or pay employees.” A female user remarked on O’Donnell’s disconnect, saying, “You’re encouraging people to harm their livelihoods out of resentment.”

Several commenters highlighted that O’Donnell, who has moved to Ireland, shouldn’t dictate how Americans should respond to their economic struggles. One user noted, “If you no longer live here, why should your words carry weight?”

Outrage grew as people pointed out that a millionaire like O’Donnell couldn’t possibly understand the difficulties faced by the average worker. One person quipped, “How tough can it be for someone who’s rich? Just postponing a yacht purchase?”

In a different approach, one Instagram user vowed to do the opposite of a boycott, stating, “I plan to spend as much money as I can during this time.” This sentiment encapsulated a growing frustration with celebrity influence on social issues.

Finally, one stripped-down message encapsulated the perspective of many: “Boycott Rosie!” It’s apparent that while O’Donnell may have rallied some support for her cause, she also faced significant pushback from those feeling overwhelmed by extreme political views.
