He’s back!
Sinbad makes his return in Tyler Perry’s upcoming thriller, *Straw*. It’s a significant comeback for the 68-year-old comedian, marking his first role since experiencing a stroke five years ago that required a lengthy hospitalization.
In this film, Sinbad, whose real name is David Adkins, portrays Benny, a character that revolves around a single mother who will go to great lengths to help her ill daughter.
The ensemble cast also features notable actresses such as Taraji P. Henson, Sheri Shepherd, and Teyana Taylor.
In the initial sneak peek of Sinbad’s character, he appears quite somber, dressed in a white shirt paired with a checkered jacket, while wearing a black beanie.
Perry, aged 55, discussed Sinbad’s return after a film screening in New York on June 3rd. He emphasized the importance of supporting family, saying, “It’s very important to me that as a man, it’s crucial for men to want to care for their families.”
He shared his feelings about creating this opportunity for Sinbad, noting how exciting it was to see him return to acting. “I’m really excited about him, and he delivered,” Perry remarked.
Sinbad’s journey hasn’t been easy; he suffered a stroke in October 2020, requiring nine months in the hospital. His family expressed their love and support during this challenging time via an Instagram post, highlighting Sinbad’s positive influence in the lives of many. They remain hopeful about his recovery, stating they believe he’ll soon be making people laugh again.
In November 2022, Sinbad gave fans insight into his recovery, admitting he was still relearning how to walk. He faced daunting odds; the survival rate for such strokes was around 30%.Fortunately, he has made significant progress, and his family noted his determination to overcome the hurdles he still faces.
Additionally, they revealed that Sinbad’s stroke was caused by a blood clot that traveled from his heart to his brain.
Less than two years post-stroke, he made a public appearance on February 29, 2024, as part of a cast from “Another World.” Following this, he expressed gratitude on social media for the support he received from fans, sharing feelings about the journey he’s been on.
Sinbad conveyed a message of hope, saying, “Hope to see more of me soon.” He joked about his fans potentially being surprised to see him. “I can’t believe you’re here!” is something he anticipates hearing as he re-emerges in the public eye.
*Straw* is set to begin streaming on Netflix starting June 6th.
