Gladys Knight Responds to Son’s Allegations Against Her Husband
Gladys Knight expressed that her son has been a significant source of happiness for her. Shanga Hankerson, Knight’s son and famous for his mother’s hit “Midnight Train to Georgia,” has accused her husband, William McDowell, of mental and financial abuse. He recently lodged a formal complaint with authorities in North Carolina.
Despite these serious allegations, the 81-year-old Knight reassured Fox News Digital that she is “doing very well.” She was seen enjoying herself while walking with fellow performers Chaka Khan, Patty LaBelle, and Stephanie Mills as part of her “Queens” tour.
In her statement, Knight noted, “I’m sorry that my health and performance have been misrepresented. I want the fans and the people involved to be relieved. I’m doing well, especially for someone who’s been on stage for three-quarters of a century. It’s hard to believe, isn’t it?” She emphasized her health and happiness, mentioning that she has been spending quality time with friends and family lately. Knight also shared her excitement about returning to the stage with “my sisters” on the tour.
Hankerson revealed to People Magazine that he filed a complaint earlier this month, alleging abuse against his mother by McDowell. He claimed he has tried to give McDowell space to fulfill his role, but feels that isn’t happening, adding, “Why is she in this situation? That’s really my problem.”
Shanga, who is 49, is Knight’s son with her former husband, Barry Hankerson. Knight married McDowell in 2001. A representative for Knight dismissed the claims, stating they are “basically unfounded.” They noted that Knight has not been on the tour since June 1st, expressing eagerness to resume performances in September.
Laura Ellovich, a representative for Knight, commented on Shanga’s allegations, saying, “Gladys and her team are very saddened by Shanga’s unfounded allegations, especially since he had no substantial contact with her.” Furthermore, she added that their lawyers might have to consider legal action due to what they see as defamatory remarks.
