Singer Richard Sterban of the Oak Ridge Boys diagnosed with pancreatic cancer

Richard Sterban’s Health Update

Richard Sterban, a member of the Oak Ridge Boys, has shared some troubling news regarding his health with supporters. The 82-year-old musician announced on Thursday, September 25th, that he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

“In March of this year, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer,” Sterban revealed. “However, I’m under the care of some of the best cancer doctors in the country. With a bit of faith, I truly believe I can get through this.”

He expressed heartfelt gratitude to fans, stating, “I want to thank everyone, especially the fans, for your concerns. Your continued prayers mean a lot to me.”

Sterban, who has been part of the Oak Ridge Boys since 1972, recently rejoined the band for a performance at the Academy of Country Music Awards in May. While he has needed support during some tours, he hopes to be back on stage soon.

“I feel quite good most days and hope to return to touring in a few months,” he added.

This announcement comes just a year after Joe Bonsall, a fellow band member, passed away due to complications related to ALS. Bonsall had previously announced that he would stop touring after his diagnosis left him unable to walk.

Sterban reflected on his long tenure with the band, saying, “It’s been a great 50 years, and I’m grateful to everyone involved—crew, staff, and especially the fans. Your prayers have truly kept me going.”

The Oak Ridge Boys, known for their contributions to country and gospel music, were originally formed in 1943 as the Oak Ridge Quartet. Over the years, the group has seen various members come and go.

Lead vocalist Duane Allen once stated in an interview that the bonds formed among the members have strengthened significantly throughout their lengthy careers. “I think we’ve become closer than ever,” he mentioned. “The experiences we’ve shared are far more meaningful than any minor disagreements we might have had along the way.”

As fans await updates on Sterban’s condition, the band continues to garner support and goodwill from their dedicated audience.
