Single mother who overcame cancer four times fatally shot by stray bullet in her home

A Colorado mother, Jennifer James, 49, lost her life after being shot when a stranger claimed he was cleaning his gun and inadvertently fired it in her home. This tragic event took place on April 28, when 20-year-old Ebenezer Work reportedly shot from a vehicle parked outside her residence in Berthoud, located north of Denver.

According to police reports, Work asserted that the shooting was accidental with a Glock 22 handgun. one bullet went through a window, striking James in the arms and chest.

Despite her efforts to call 911, she succumbed to her injuries before help arrived. Emergency responders attempted to administer first aid but declared her dead at the scene.

At the time of the incident, two of her children were present in the house. Ashley James, her eldest son, expressed deep anger over the senseless act of violence. “It makes me mad that this kind of act could happen,” he remarked.

Work, who faces charges of first-degree murder, was apprehended after authorities utilized surveillance footage and license plate information to locate him. He is currently being held in the Larimer County Jail under a cash-only bond of $1.25 million.

James was a cancer survivor, having fought the disease four times. Her family remembered her as a dedicated mother who selflessly devoted herself to her children. Ashley reflected on her impact, stating, “She was the most selfless mom anyone could ask for.”
