On Friday, road crews closed eastbound lanes on a short stretch of Interstate 80 in northern New Jersey due to a sinkhole, but it was still unclear when they would reopen.

A highway guardrail still dangles in the air across a 40-foot-wide (12-meter) gaping hole, and an abandoned mine collapsed beneath the highway's right shoulder Thursday morning, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation. When I did that, a hole opened.

The sinkhole forced drivers to take a short detour near Wharton, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of New York City.
Crews stabilized the area and began excavation. The Highways Authority announced Friday that they would be working around the clock to repair the road.

The department said when the eastbound lanes will be closed depends on the extent of repairs and future weather conditions. Drivers should continue to expect delays and use alternate routes.
