According to reports, a man trying to drive his girlfriend's car through a flooded street in Brooklyn early Monday morning ended up falling into a hidden sinkhole caused by a burst water pipe, making matters worse.
The well-meaning boyfriend was trying to move his SUV away from floodwaters at about 3:45 a.m. at 275 Bay 37th Street and Cropsey Avenue in Bath Beach when the freak accident happened.
“We went outside to move the car and my boyfriend tried to move it and it went straight into the hole,” Vincenza Malagiere said. He told 1010 WINS.
“There was no one outside so we did our best and I rescued him. He tried to help himself and I pulled him out,” she added.
The NYPD called in a tow truck to pull the car out of the hole. According to ABC7.
No one was injured, according to the FDNY.
Burst water mains damaged three homes and seven private residences, making it impossible to take showers or flush toilets.
The city's Department of Environmental Protection said repairs were completed and water service was restored by 3 p.m.
