Sinkhole swallows car on Philadelphia street

Philadelphia – A sinkhole opened up under the streets of a nearby Philadelphia street Tuesday afternoon, with the water main snapping underground, swallowing one car and nearly insisting on another.

Luckily, no one was injured.

Fox 29 Philadelphia reported that the 6-inch water main broke at noon, leading to a huge sinkhole in the city's port Richmond area.

Fox29 reporter Steve Keeley said he had just heard of the Big Bang and spoke to a neighbor who said the whole house might be in the cave next.

The SUV fell into the hole belonged to the wife of Philadelphia police officer Steve Williams, Keely said.

Williams said he learned about the ordeal when he received a desperate call from his wife.

“My wife called me at work and I didn't know what she was saying,” Williams told Keeley.

However, Williams seemed to be going through a very unusual situation.

“I've been a police officer for 32 years,” Williams told Keeley. “It's part of my life in Philadelphia and it's not a big deal.”

Authorities blocked the streets in both directions while assessing the damage.

According to Fox 29, about 30 homes near the break lost water.

The repair crew worked to fix the main water break and dug the car through a hole.
