Sirens will sound throughout Nassau County on Memorial Day to mark a moment of silence for all residents.

On this anniversary, Nassau County is encouraging residents to pause twice in recognition of the area’s significant veteran community.

The county’s 71 fire stations will activate alarms and flashing sirens to signal two moments of silence, honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country.

This coordinated ritual is set for this Monday at 12 pm and 6 pm, a practice that has been in place since county executive Bruce Blakeman assumed office in 2022.

“Memorial Day is often filled with celebrations and family activities, but we must not forget the true meaning of the day,” Blakeman stated outside the Valley Stream Fire Department headquarters.

“It’s about remembering the young men and women who never got to live their lives fully, those who didn’t graduate or get to celebrate with their families. They sacrificed everything for us and for this country.”

County officials have asked all residents to take a break from their activities, whether it’s grilling, swimming, or driving.

“When you hear that siren, wherever you are, I urge you to take a moment to reflect, to be silent, and think of those who gave their lives for our country,” Blakeman urged.

“If you’re driving and it’s safe, I recommend turning off the radio.”
