Apple held its annual developers conference on Monday and announced new software upgrades for its entire line of products.
IOS, the operating system that runs on iPhones, has received what could be called its biggest upgrade ever.
Apple has built artificial intelligence into iOS 18, making it smarter and more feature-rich. iOS 18 is also more customizable than ever before, allowing you to tweak your home screen and more.
Apple also announced macOS 15, iPadOS 18, and watchOS 11.

New software upgrades for all your Apple devices (apple)
iOS 18: What’s New in the Latest Software
Apple has officially announced iOS 18. The software won’t be released to the public until September, but there are a few features that all iPhone users should know about.
The update includes new home screen customizations, offers app icon theming options, lets you place app icons anywhere you want, automatically colors them in dark mode, and brings new controls to the lock screen to replace the flashlight and camera icons.
The list of new features in iOS 18 is long, but Apple’s new features for iMessage and texting in general are noteworthy. Apps can now reply to messages with emojis and stickers, not just the old Tapback. You can also schedule text, add effects, and format text like underlining and strikethrough. Additionally, iPhone 14 and 15 users can send messages over satellite even without Wi-Fi or cellular service. iOS 18 also adds RCS, Reminders integration into Calendar, and the option to make home screen icons larger.

“Apple Intelligence”: Everything about Apple’s AI efforts
Apple has struggled to maintain its dominance in the smartphone market, losing market share to companies like Samsung and facing major challenges in key markets like China, but the company’s latest AI capabilities (collectively known as Apple Intelligence) could help it overcome these issues.
Apple Intelligence is an AI-generated “personal intelligence” system that’s at the heart of Apple’s device ecosystem. But it only works on the latest and greatest Apple devices. To use Apple Intelligence on iPhone, you’ll need an iPhone 15 Pro or later. On iPad and Mac, you’ll need at least the M1 chip.
Apple Intelligence brings significant improvements to Siri, the virtual assistant on iPhone and iPad. The new Siri is powered by AI and understands context, so it doesn’t have to repeat information. Apple says, “Siri will be able to find and understand things it couldn’t before.” This is good news for anyone who’s noticed that both Alexa and Google Assistant have surpassed Siri’s capabilities for a while.
Siri will be able to recognize which screen you’re currently looking at and take actions within the app. For example, if you’re filling out a form that asks for your driver’s license number, Siri can automatically look up a photo of your driver’s license, extract the relevant number, and enter it into the field for you. The Cupertino, California-based company has also partnered with OpenAI to make ChatGPT available within Siri.
Apple Intelligence also brings new features like Writing Tools, which helps you rewrite, proofread and summarize text, and Image Playground, which lets you create images using your own style, including sketches, illustrations and animations, in apps like Messages and Notes.
But these features also encourage people to alter reality and create fake images or fictional ones in which they rewrite their own words, and encourage people to read selected summaries rather than the entire message sent to them.
For example, Apple demonstrated how it could create fake AI images of people in your photos and contacts, such as a birthday photo showing a fake friend surrounded by balloons.
Apple CEO Tim Cook calls Apple Intelligence “a new advanced intelligence capability.” I believe that Apple Intelligence, powered by ChatGPT, is a breakthrough in addressing key privacy and security issues. While it may be more private than other services, the privacy of your activities over your personal data is declining.

macOS 15: Mac software upgrade
In addition to iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, Apple also officially unveiled macOS 15. The new software is named after a California landmark, the Sequoia, continuing Apple’s tradition of naming previous versions after California places.
The new OS makes connecting your Mac and iPhone even easier. Not only can you mirror your iPhone screen on your Mac, but you can also control your iPhone directly from your Mac. You can even drag and drop between macOS apps and your iPhone screen.
Apple has also added a standalone Passwords app in macOS 15 Sequoia, so you can manage your passwords without needing a third-party app. Safari has gotten smarter, using AI to automatically highlight useful information like directions in Maps and videos on web pages. macOS 15 also comes with Apple Intelligence AI features, which can generate text within apps and help you create images.

Everything else Apple announced at WWDC 2024
Apple’s WWDC 2024 was packed with new announcements, and we’ve detailed the major ones above, but here’s what else the company announced:
1. iPadOS 18: It shares many home screen and control center configurations with iOS 18. The iPad operating system also brings a variety of enhancements to iPad app functionality, adding a new Calculator app that was previously missing. The Notes app now offers more powerful handwriting capabilities thanks to Apple Pencil’s Smart Script feature. If you’re not good at handwriting, you can use this feature to improve the look.
2. WatchOS 11: It’s a modern operating system for the Apple Watch that offers interactive widgets that provide useful actions and new watch faces, and automatically surfaces the best photos to “surprise and delight,” according to Apple’s marketing strategy.

3. tvOS 18: Apple TV has been upgraded to tvOS 18, which adds a new Insights section with additional information like actor names, music titles, etc. Apple has also added support for the 21:9 format for watching widescreen movies.

4. Vision OS2: Apple also announced VisionOS 2, the first major upgrade to the software that runs Apple Vision Pro, which improves the Photos app by adding Spatial Photos and Spatial Personas to the shared photo view, as well as new hand gesture commands for easier navigation, like tapping to go to the Home screen or turning your wrist to check battery level.

Important points about the cart
Apple has made significant changes to its software platform that should allow users to get more out of their Apple devices. But new AI capabilities are limited to newer devices, forcing consumers to spend more money to buy the latest devices. Apple’s new AI, introduced in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15, has incredibly powerful tools to organize the information we consume in our lives into a more usable context. These tools can also be easily misused to spread misinformation or create false realities. I appreciate the progress and innovation. At the same time, it raises bigger questions about this leap into AI.
