Two young children drowned in a pond outside a Long Island apartment building on Saturday while their mother was asleep inside, police and law enforcement sources said.
According to Suffolk County Police, the tragedy occurred around 3:15 p.m. behind the Fairfield Townhouses in Holtsville.
Sources told The Post that the girls snuck out of the house while their mother was sleeping.
The bodies of the sisters, aged two and four, were found in the water by searchers just minutes after their family reported the girls missing.
They were rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said.
It is unclear how long the girls were in the water before being recovered.

Located south of the Long Island Expressway, Fairfield Townhouses advertises “sprawling lots with ponds and walking paths” on its website.
Rates for one- and two-bedroom units range from $2,475 to $2,900 per month.
I left a message at the management office but it wasn't returned.
Police are investigating the incident and are urging anyone with information to call the murder tip line.
