Cross-Country Marijuana Smuggling Operation Busted in NYC
This week, six individuals were taken into custody as authorities dismantled an alleged licensed marijuana smuggling ring that spanned across the country, resulting in the seizure of over $2.5 million worth of cannabis.
The operation involved the use of a large tractor-trailer style truck transporting various cannabis products from California to a storage facility in Maspeth, according to officials who made the announcement on Friday.
Once the products arrived at the storage location, they were supposed to be sorted and either distributed to another unit or sold directly to customers, authorities reported.
It’s been suggested that these activities have been ongoing since April. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Queens District Attorney’s office, the New Jersey Division of the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the NYPD Cannabis Task Force.
On Thursday, around 2,000 pounds of THC flowers were uncovered, along with hundreds of one-pound pre-packaged weed bags, pre-rolled joints, and nearly 1,000 pounds of THC vape pens, following the execution of multiple search warrants in Maspeth and Long Island City.
The arrested individuals include 29-year-old Eduardo Lopez and 40-year-old Courtney Ferguson from Manhattan, along with Kyu Gardens residents Elzena Mitopova (34) and Anna Migal (47). Additionally, 24-year-old Jose Carbajar Enamorado from Jackson Heights and Emerson Ramos Garcia from Bayside were apprehended as well. They allegedly did not possess the necessary permissions to sell cannabis in New York.
During the proceedings, a Queens judge set various court dates in September and October for the six suspects, all of whom are charged with first-degree criminal possession of cannabis.
If found guilty, they could face prison sentences ranging from two to seven years. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz remarked on the negative impact of illegally sold THC products on the community, emphasizing the importance of legal dispensaries undergoing a rigorous approval process.
