Six of the deadliest non-combat military aviation accidents in the last 5 years

This week, a US Navy electronic warfare aircraft crashed into San Diego Bay, California, causing injury to two service members.

The Navy said both pilots on the Boeing EA-18G Growler were rescued. However, other service members involved in non-combat military aviation accidents were not so fortunate.

Here are six of the most fatal non-combat military aviation accidents that have occurred in the last five years.

1. February 6, 2024 – Marine Corps helicopter disappears during stormy climate

Five Marines were killed when a helicopter crashed during a storm in a mountain outside of San Diego.

The CH-53E Superstallion left Creach Air Force Base in Nevada and headed for Marine Corps Air Station Miramar near San Diego. We lost contact late in the evening as rain and snow were affecting the area.

“It should have happened,” says the father of the Marines, who was killed in a California helicopter crash.

Bradford Moulton, 27-year-old Colonel Benjamin Moulton, who was one of the victims, said he wanted the man to be “on the ground” during the “millennium storm.” .

2. November 29, 2023 – US Air Force Osprey crashes from southern Japan

Eight Air Force Special Operations Command service members were killed on a CV-22B Osprey aircraft that crashed during a training mission near Japan.

The aircraft was heading towards Okinawa at the time of the incident, but later led to temporary grounding of the entire Osprey fleet.

An investigation by the Air Force revealed that the crash was caused by cracks in the metal gear and the decision of pilots to continue flying, rather than paying attention to some warnings.

3. November 10, 2023 – Special operators involved in crashing in the Mediterranean

Five US Army Special Operations Airmen were killed when a helicopter crashed into the Eastern Mediterranean.

“The MH-60 Blackhawk was conducting regular flight training, including aerial refueling and aerial gunnery during night conditions on the water. The helicopters contact the water, causing losses of crew and helicopters. “We've done it,” the Department of Defense said at the time.

“Our service members breathe life for our country every day,” added former President Biden. “They are willing to take risks to keep Americans safe and secure, and their daily courage and selflessness are a lasting testimony of the best in our country.”

4. March 9, 2023 – Two Army helicopters collide in Kentucky

Two Army helicopters collided in southwestern Kentucky, killing nine service members.

The two HH60 Blackhawks in the 101st Airborne Division (air raid) were conducting training exercises around 10pm when crashed in Trigg County, Director of Public Affairs Campbell told Fox News Digital at the time.

5. June 8, 2022 – Marine Corps Osprey Training Missions Will Be Fatal

Five Marines were killed in a training mission in Southern California when the MV-22B Osprey crashed into the desert.

The aircraft that fell in Imperial County belonged to the third marine aircraft wing based in Camp Pendleton.

The post-collision investigation report found that it was caused by mechanical failures related to the clutch mounted on the Osprey, which ultimately led to engine failure.

6. August 31, 2021 – US Navy helicopter crashes into the ocean off the coast of Southern California

Five crew members were killed when a US Navy helicopter jumped into the waters about 60 nautical miles off the coast of San Diego.

It happened after the MH-60S Seahawk helicopter landed while on the aircraft's airline USS Abraham Lincoln.

Mechanical issues led to the helicopter beginning to shake violently, sending the tail-first into the spin that ripped the rotor blade before plunging into the water, according to the Navy Times.
