Reflecting on the Abraham Accords’ Sixth Anniversary
On the sixth anniversary of the Abraham Accords, Jared Kushner, who played a key role in the agreement, stated on Thursday that the Middle East is once again at a “tipping point.” He suggested that this moment presents an opportunity to “start again” in light of the historic normalization agreement.
Kushner noted that back when President Trump initiated the accords, he was opening a new chapter of peace and partnership in the region. In a post on X, he reflected, “A lot of people said it wasn’t possible. But thanks to courageous leadership and a willingness to challenge the old ways, we’ve shown that the impossible can be achieved.”
He characterized the agreement as a departure from long-held conventional views that kept the region trapped in outdated ideas, resulting in more division rather than unity. “The framework often managed conflicts but failed to resolve them,” he expressed.
He explained that the vision behind the Accords was straightforward: to create connections that unite cultures instead of emphasizing divisions. Kushner highlighted the potential benefits of deeper understanding, enhanced trade, and invaluable security cooperation.
According to him, this approach has led to “billions of dollars in trade, innovations, and new friendships,” altering the narrative from a simple record of agreements to one that opens the door to fresh possibilities for the region.
“Today, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment,” Kushner remarked. He expressed that with the current leadership’s courage, there’s a chance to break away from the outdated norms and pursue a shared vision for progress.
He further mentioned that the Accords illustrate another possible route toward peace. “We have an opportunity to foster a broader movement centered on cooperation and shared success,” he added, emphasizing the need to replace ineffective past ideas with new, constructive frameworks.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog responded positively, commending Trump and his team for their efforts in crafting the agreement while also advocating for an expanded future deal. Herzog described the sixth anniversary as a significant milestone for peace in the Middle East. He also stressed the importance of reflecting on the partnerships formed and looking ahead to shared pathways for growth.
“I truly believe this is just the beginning,” he stated. “It’s time for all of us to work towards broadening this peace initiative throughout the region for everyone’s benefit.”
President Trump also endorsed the expansion of the Abraham Accords. He recounted how, even amid tensions with Iran, member states maintained their commitments to the agreement. “I think they’re all going to be part of the Abraham Accords going forward,” he mentioned, reflecting optimism despite the challenges.
Relations between Israel and the UAE have strengthened significantly during this timeframe. Reports indicate that Israel has deployed military resources to help the UAE fend off threats from Iran, further deepening their strategic partnership.
Trump has actively encouraged the expansion of the Accords, mentioning that any approval of the U.S.-Saudi civilian nuclear deal would be contingent on Saudi Arabia joining the successful framework established by the Accords. Discussions regarding possible normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel have been taking place as well.
Initially brokered during Trump’s presidency, the Abraham Accords established formal ties between Israel and both the UAE and Bahrain in 2020, with Morocco and Sudan later joining the process.
