Maxim Naumov’s Emotional Olympic Debut
American figure skater Maxim Naumov delivered a heartfelt tribute to his late parents during his Olympic debut on Tuesday. His parents, former pairs world champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, tragically died in a plane crash last year. The incident occurred when a military helicopter collided mid-air with American Airlines Flight 5342 in Washington, D.C., killing 67 people.
Despite expectations that he might struggle to crack the top 10, Naumov amazed the audience at the Milan Ice Skating Stadium, earning a standing ovation. After his performance, he looked skyward and remarked, “Look what we did.”
It was an emotional night for the 24-year-old, who admitted he was unsure whether to cry or laugh. Scoring 85.65 in his short program placed him 12th and secured a spot in the next round. He skated to Nocturne No. 20, and the performance felt deeply meaningful, knowing his parents were with him in spirit.
“I have been inspired by them since day one,” Naumov said after dedicating his performance to them, holding an old photo of them on the ice alongside him in the Kiss and Cry Zone. The photo captured a special moment from when he was a child.
Tragedy struck last January when Naumov’s parents, along with other U.S. figure skaters and coaches, were killed shortly after leaving a development camp in Wichita, Kansas, post the 2025 U.S. Championships—Naumov had been on a different flight that day.
Three days before earning his Olympic spot, Naumov expressed his emotions during the U.S. Championships, again holding up the cherished childhood photo. “Sharing vulnerability with the audience and feeling their energy return is something I will never forget,” he said. “It means a lot to me to do that. That’s what we’re fighting for.”
For Naumov, competing on the ice isn’t about technical details; it’s about the passion and effort he puts forth. He emphasized that he wasn’t seeking perfection—he just wanted to give it everything he had, leaving him without regrets.
Naumov is set to perform again in the men’s free event on Friday night.
