Skeletal remains found are confirmed to be Jacob Lyon, nine years after he went missing in Florida

The long search for Jacob Ryan, who had been missing for nine years, concluded when authorities confirmed that skeletal remains found in Florida’s Panhandle in 2022 are indeed his. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office reported on Tuesday that DNA tests verified the identity of the body discovered on Miramar Beach in October 2022. His mother had reported him missing back in February 2016 when he was just 19.

“This is not the outcome our community wanted,” the sheriff’s office stated, expressing hope that Ryan’s family finds some solace in the news of his identification.

The remains were stumbled upon by a man clearing wooded land on October 20, 2022, who then alerted deputies and the First District Medical Examiner to the scene to initiate identification efforts.

Between 2022 and 2024, the medical examiner worked on identifying the victim, but the state of the remains ultimately led to requests for help from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). Authorities noted that years of environmental exposure hindered the DNA testing process.

Earlier this month, the FDLE confirmed that the remains matched Jacob Ryan, according to information from the sheriff’s office.

Ryan’s absence had triggered an extensive investigation by the Niceville police, who pursued numerous leads but were unable to uncover his whereabouts. Details regarding where he was last seen or how he ended up in Walton County remain unclear.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jacob’s death is still active, as authorities continue to collaborate with Niceville police to get to the bottom of what happened.
