Ski academy shaken by connections to several Lake Tahoe avalanche fatalities

Beloved members of a local ski school lost their lives in a tragic avalanche near Lake Tahoe, as confirmed by the California Post.

The avalanche struck Castle Peak close to Truckee, resulting in 15 casualties on Tuesday morning—eight confirmed dead and one person still unaccounted for. Additionally, six animals were rescued during a massive operation.

Sugar Bowl, a noteworthy resort in the area, expressed on Wednesday that several members of their academy are missing in the aftermath of the snow slide.

The resort stated, “The Sugar Bowl and Donner Summit communities mourn the loss of multiple lives in the Castle Peak avalanche.”

“Many members of the Sugar Bowl Academy community and others closely connected to Sugar Bowl, Donner Summit, and backcountry areas perished in the avalanche on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.”

“We are devoted to supporting our athletes, students, staff, and families as they cope with this tragedy.”

“Most importantly, the Sugar Bowl Academy community will continue to be there for families who have lost a loved one in the months and years to come,” said Executive Director Stephen McMahon. “This tragedy has undoubtedly impacted every one of us.”

He noted, “The overwhelming support for those whose lives have been forever changed highlights the strength of our community.”

“The best we can do is to surround athletes and their families with care while providing them the necessary time and space to grieve and heal.”

Some parents connected to the Sugar Bowl were hesitant to discuss the tragedy, especially since details were still coming to light.

Kurt Althoff, whose son is involved in the skiing race program, shared, “This is an absolute tragedy. My heart and that of my family go out to everyone affected by this.”

Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon gave a somber update on Wednesday, revealing that four tour guides and 11 guests were caught in the avalanche. Among the 15 individuals involved, six were rescued—one man and five women aged 30 to 55.

As rescue teams continue searching for the last missing skier, they face “extremely dangerous” conditions, with more snow anticipated and avalanche warnings still in effect, Moon indicated.

Residents anxiously awaited the release of the victim’s names, with Town Councilor Jan Zabriskie suggesting it would happen soon.
