Ski jumper removed from competition due to boot size issues

Daniel Chofenig Disqualified from Olympic Qualifiers

For Michael Jordan, it was all about shoes. But for the ski jumpers at the Olympics, it was the boots that made a crucial difference in their qualifications for the 2026 Winter Games.

Austrian ski jumper Daniel Chofenig had entered the Milan-Cortina Games as a leading contender for the gold medal in large hill ski jumping, bolstered by his victory in the World Cup during the 2024-25 season.

Unfortunately for Chofenig, he was disqualified because his boots exceeded the Olympic height regulations—by about 4 mm, to be precise.

In a moment of candid reflection, he mentioned, “I used new shoes in training. Honestly, I wasn’t really happy with them, but I went with it.” He also acknowledged his oversight, stating, “I was naive and didn’t check the size. I was incredibly stupid.”

In a related highlight, the U.S. men’s hockey team celebrated an undefeated record in Group C after defeating Germany, thus advancing to the next round of the Olympics.

The disqualification came even after Chofenig had qualified for the finals, which must have been especially frustrating.

In the event itself, Slovenia’s Domen Prevc captured the gold medal with a total of 301.8 points, while silver went to Japan’s Ren Nikaido, and Poland’s Kaczper Tomasiak secured bronze.

Another Austrian ski jumper, Jan Hoerl, finished fifth in the same competition.

Following this setback, Chofenig plans to return to the World Cup circuit and focus on preparing for the 2030 Olympics. He has already celebrated over 20 podium finishes in World Cup events and contributed to team medals at the World Championships in both 2023 and 2025.
