Skier Hunter Hess shifts his perspective after expressing 'mixed feelings' about representing the USA: 'I love my country'

Hunter Hess Shares Complex Views on Representing the U.S. at the Olympics

American skier Hunter Hess recently expressed a complex perspective on representing the United States in the Olympics, stating that America is a great country but “there has to be something better.” His comments sparked considerable backlash, which prompted a clarification.

Originally, during a media briefing, Hess, who hails from Bend, Oregon, mentioned that wearing the red, white, and blue felt a bit challenging for him. “I think it’s a little tough,” he remarked, acknowledging a mix of feelings about the current state of affairs. He suggested that not everyone, including himself, is particularly pleased with everything happening in the country. Instead, he emphasized feeling a duty to his friends, family, and values that align with what he stands for.

Hess remarked, “Just because I’m flying the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in America,” which inevitably led to criticism across the nation. Notably, even the former president weighed in, labeling Hess a “true loser” on social media.

In response to the backlash, on Instagram, Hess conveyed his love for his country, sharing that there are many wonderful aspects of America. He acknowledged, however, that there will always be room for improvement. “One of the many things that makes this country great is that we have the right and the freedom to point that out,” he stated alongside a photo of himself with a smile, anticipating to represent Team USA in the upcoming Olympics.

As he concluded his post, Hess expressed gratitude for the support he received. Yet, some reactions have been skeptical, with figures like boxer Jake Paul publicly criticizing him. He echoed a sentiment that if Hess didn’t want to represent America, he should consider living elsewhere.

Qualifying rounds for the men’s freeski halfpipe at the Winter Olympics will commence on February 19th, leading to the finals on February 20th.
