Skip Bayless challenges Stephen A's statement that 'three white guys' can't win an NBA Championship together.

Skip Bayless, a well-known sports commentator, has expressed optimism about the newly formed Los Angeles Lakers, even with the presence of just three white players on the team. His comments came in response to Stephen A. Smith, who criticized the Lakers for pursuing success with “three white guys,” suggesting that, historically, winning championships requires multiple Black players.

Smith reiterated this viewpoint last week, stating, “I’m not backing down. When in NBA history has a team led by three white players ever gone to the promised land? Someone has to say it.”

Bayless, while acknowledging that Smith’s comments were racially charged, defended his right to speak but vehemently disagreed with his conclusions. He argued that the crucial factor is not the color of the players but rather their talent. He believes the Lakers have the right mix in players like Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and Walker Kessler.

“This isn’t just about three typical guys; there’s nothing ordinary about this trio,” Bayless argued. He even suggested that these Lakers might be among the best in the Western Conference, pointing out how well they complement each other. He concluded that it’s possible they could defy the historical trends that Smith referenced.

It’s interesting that this debate even exists at all, highlighting certain racial biases within sports media. If a white commentator were to suggest that a team with a Black quarterback, coach, and general manager couldn’t win a Super Bowl based solely on race, it would likely bring significant backlash, particularly from Smith himself.

Smith’s perspective also has flaws. Given that the NBA is predominantly Black, it’s understandable that there are fewer elite white players. But that doesn’t negate the existence of talent. Stars like Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic show that high-level white players can thrive. Pairing Jokic or Doncic with someone like Reaves could lead to immediate success, evident from Jokic’s previous accomplishments.

The fundamental issue isn’t that a team with three white players can’t win; it’s simply a matter of demographics. The idea that only players of a certain race can lead a team to success is a misguided stereotype. Smith’s comments imply that race is the sole determinant of a championship, which is a false notion.

This also doesn’t necessarily label Smith as a racist; he just seems eager to stir controversy. In a landscape where bold statements attract attention, it’s not surprising that he would resort to such claims, especially as younger personalities emerge in sports media.

Bayless deserves recognition for challenging this rhetoric, especially in an atmosphere where criticism of white players is often overlooked. It’s a refreshing change to see a commentator stand up against that kind of biased commentary.
