Angel Reese’s Season Comes to a Tumultuous Close
CHICAGO — Angel Reese’s rocky sophomore season in the WNBA concluded with her sitting on the bench during the Liberty’s regular season finale.
This might also signify the end of her tenure in Chicago.
Reese has been criticized for remarks she made to the Chicago Tribune, where she voiced her concerns about the franchise’s direction. She noted, rather bluntly, that she wouldn’t be “settling down on the same S-T as we’ve done this year.”
“We have to get great players,” she elaborated, adding that negotiating that situation feels impossible. It’s… well, it’s complicated.
In what seems like an ongoing drama, Reese had issues with some teammates, which led to a team meeting. Following a public apology to her teammates, she was suspended for a half game but has been sidelined entirely due to a back injury.
Before the game, coach Tyler Marsh was asked about Reese’s future with the team, and he merely replied, “certainly.” His one-word response didn’t exactly inspire much confidence.
Reese, a two-time All-Star, struggled through the season, appearing in only 30 games due to injuries. Despite that, she managed to score a career-high 14.7 points, continuing to lead the league for the second season in a row with an average of 12.6.
Marsh characterized Reese’s campaign in 2025 as “bittersweet.” It really does seem like a mixed bag.
“From my perspective, especially on the court, Angels have had many areas for growth,” Marsh commented. “This year, we got to witness her playmaking abilities in various situations. Her versatility has allowed her to handle different matchups, tackling challenges on both ends of the floor.”
The future for Reese and the Sky remains uncertain. Chicago selected her seventh in the 2024 draft, positioning her as a foundational piece of the franchise.
With two years remaining on her rookie contract before she becomes a restricted free agent, it’s still unclear if Reese has played her last game in a Sky uniform. The anticipation is a bit nerve-wracking, to say the least.
