A 32-year-old British skydiver, Jade Damarrell, lost her life during a jump after her relationship ended. She died on April 27th in a Durham county field in North England, according to authorities. Coroner Leslie Hamilton indicated that her death was a suicide during an investigation this past Thursday.
Having logged over 500 successful jumps, Damarrell intentionally failed to deploy her main parachute, thereby rendering the automatic activation device ineffective. This means that backup parachutes, which are supposed to engage at certain heights and speeds if a skydiver doesn’t deploy, didn’t activate. Reports indicated that her equipment functioned properly following her fall.
At the time, Damarrell had been on a date with fellow skydiver Ben Goodfellow, who is 26 years old. During the coroner’s investigation, details emerged about their relationship, revealing that they had broken up the previous night. A friend disclosed to the Daily Mail that Ben had ended the relationship just before Jade’s tragic jump.
“He went to work the next day, when Jade fell to her death,” shared the friend.
In the hours leading up to her demise, Damarrell had completed six jumps and had worn a camera to capture her date. However, she chose not to wear it during her final jump.
Jade’s family has accepted the coroner’s finding and expressed their appreciation for the skydiving community’s support during this difficult time. They described her as “glorious, beautiful, brave, and truly extraordinary.” They also voiced a desire to foster a culture that encourages kindness and support around mental health issues.
Leslie Hamilton has not yet responded to inquiries from media outlets regarding the findings in this case.
