The wife of a prominent Georgia lawyer was found guilty of murder this week, more than six years after her husband's body was found in a crematorium.
The Cherokee County District Attorney's Office announced in a statement Monday that Melody Farris was found guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, concealing the death of another and making a false statement.

Prosecutors pointed out that Faris was the only person who had the motive and opportunity to kill her husband, and that she was the beneficiary of his $2 million life insurance policy.
They told the jury there was a blood trail in the couple's home that ran from the kitchen down the stairs to the ground, according to the Tribune-Ledger.

Farris' lawyers tried to pin the blame on her son, Scott Farris, who discovered his father's burned body in a pile of ashes on a 10-acre property on Purcell Lane in Alpharetta.
They pointed out that Farris' son was the only person in the family to own .38 caliber ammunition, and how a 130-pound woman could have carried her husband's 300-pound body, Fox 5 reported. He questioned whether he was able to move the man to the stake by himself.
However, the younger Faris denied killing his father or helping dispose of his body.
Investigators initially believed Gary Farris had a medical emergency and died after falling into the fire, the Tribune-Ledger reported. However, because one of his ribs was struck by a bullet, a murder investigation was started.

The younger Faris testified in court that his mother showed emotion only when police were told the body found in the hole was human, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

Faris had been married to her husband for more than 30 years, but prosecutors argued that the couple was having financial problems at the time of the murder.
Testimony also revealed that Faris had an affair with another man in 2009. Emily Farris, the defendant's daughter, said that despite her father's attempts to reconcile, her parents' relationship never fully recovered.

Faris initially told investigators she had never had an affair. However, she changed her statement and ended her extramarital affair with another man in 2017, People reported.
